It was announced December 20, 2017, that Veronica Wait, from Ware Elementary, would be the USD 475 nominee for Master Teacher. She will apply for the award over the coming weeks and represent USD 475 in the Master Teacher 2018 process. Emporia State University established the Kansas Master Teacher awards in 1954. The awards are presented annually to teachers who have served the profession long and well and who also present the good qualities of earnest and conscientious teachers.  To be eligible for nomination, each candidate must have taught or served in an instructional leadership role for at least five years in any Kansas P-12 or higher education schools.  Veronica was chosen by a panel of previous Master Teacher nominees from the school district to represent USD 475 for the 2018 school year.

Veronica Wait grew up in Junction City and graduated from Junction City High School in 2000. After graduating from Kansas State University in December of 2006, she moved to Salina and taught math at Lakewood Middle School from January 2007 to May 2009. She moved back to the area and has worked for the school district full-time since August 2009. She started her teaching career in USD 475 as a second-grade teacher at Ware Elementary in 2009 and taught for five years. She then moved to the library media position at Ware in August of 2014 and that is where she is still today. She is also the coordinator of the 21st Century after-school program which she began in August of 2015.

“I love teaching in USD 475 because I feel like we are encouraged to be our best and we are offered a variety of tools to make that happen.  We have many opportunities for professional development and collaboration.  The leadership in my building sees the potential in all of us and presents us with opportunities to help us grow.  I feel like I am surrounded by other passionate teachers in our district that love making a difference in the lives of our students.  I also love our students in USD 475.  The opportunity to positively impact so many students is truly a gift and I love inspiring students academically and personally.”  – Veronica Wait

Geary County Schools wishes Veronica Wait the best of luck during the Kansas Master Teacher 2018 process. Good luck!
